Student intake may be at any stage of the year for students between of 5 and 18 years of age.
If your child will be five years old by 30 April of the year of school entry, they are eligible to start school. The policy of the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development states:
“School programs should be provided by the Department of Education for students with intellectual disabilities within the same range as for other students, namely, approximately 5 to 18 years”.
All children enrolling in Prep will require an immunisation certificate available from the local council. This must be presented at enrolment. A child is deemed to be immunised when she/he has received immunisations against Diphtheria, Tetanus, Poliomyelitis, Measles and Mumps.
Different to mainstream schools, students at Latrobe Special Developmental School must go through a referral procedure before enrolment. Each student needs to be assessed by an educational psychologist, complete an educational needs questionnaire and have the enrolment approved by the Resource Co-ordination Group. Once assessment is completed enrolment can proceed with placement of child based on their educational needs. School enrolment also provides access to free door to door transport for those students who reside within our designated transport zone.
Student intake may be at any stage of the year and at any age level. A transition program will be undertaken to ensure student needs are identified and placement is appropriate.
Latrobe Special Developmental School works closely with government primary and secondary schools in the Latrobe City. Families have the choice of requesting their child be dual enrolled. That is, attend both their local primary/secondary school and Latrobe Special Developmental School. The nature of the time fraction the student attends each school will be based on their needs and can change. For example a student may attend his/her local primary school on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and Latrobe Special Developmental school on Thursday and Friday.
Staff at Latrobe Special Developmental School liaise closely with staff from the mainstream school to support those students with a dual enrolment. Individual Education plans and Student Support Groups are undertaken collaboratively with involvement of staff from both schools the student attends.
